If business is stable and long-term planning is a valid paradigm, then perhaps this is achievable. But today's business paradigm is one of anticipating surprise.
Example of recent business shift:
-capture mindshare
-establish ubiquity
-capture venture funding
-continue to establish ubiquity...at the expense of revenue
-eventually reestablish the revenue/profit parameters
